Twisted Crochet Square Pattern
If you are looking for a fun crochet square that has a wonderful texture, then this is the one! This crochet square pattern uses just a few basic stitches (half double and double crochet!) that are twisted to create a unique texture. Plus, as a bonus, it works up quickly as well.
Below, we’ll teach you how to make this crochet square with twisted texture, as well as give you some project ideas to use them in as well.
How To Make A Twisted Crochet Square Pattern
To be able to crochet this square, you’ll need to know some basic stitches and have a few crocheting supplies on hand.
Supplies
Yarn: This square is made with a two weight yarn (aka lightweight yarn) called Friends Cotton 8/6 by Hobbii. If you’d like to use a different weight yarn, that would work as well, but keep in mind the finished square size will not be the same.
Crochet Hook: This square was worked up with an E-3.5 mm crochet hook. If you choose to use a different yarn weight, follow along with the recommended crochet hook size on the label of the yarn.
Yarn Needle: It is a good idea to use a yarn needle (aka tapestry needle) to weave in yarn ends that have been cut. Learn how to weave in yarn ends, so you get a perfect crochet square every time!
Scissors: We recommend a nice pair of stork scissors, but any pair of scissors will work for cutting yarn ends when needed.
Stitch Markers: (optional) Stitch markers are a good to use to mark the first stitch of each round. This way, you’ll be able to know where it starts and keep your stitch count correct as you work in the round. I recommend stitch markers for those that are newer to crochet, so it is easier to keep track of your stitches in the square.
Crochet Stitches
You will need to know a few basic crochet stitches to make the square pattern as shown. First, you’ll need to know how to double crochet, half double crochet as well as the chain stitch.
Learn more below about each crochet stitch used in this easy square pattern.
Double Crochet (dc)
- Yarn over (yo) the crochet hook, insert the crochet hook into the designated stitch.
- Yo the crochet hook again, draw the yarn through the stitch, so there are 3 loops on the crochet hook
- Yo the crochet hook again, draw through 2 loops, so there are 2 loops on the crochet hook.
- Yo the crochet hook, draw through the final 2 loops.
Chain Stitch (ch)
A chain stitch is a simple crochet stitch that often serves as the foundation for other crochet stitches worked into a project.
- Make a slip knot.
- Yo (yarn over)
- Draw a loop of yarn back through the loop on the crochet hook. You have completed your first chain stitch.
- Yo and draw a loop through the loop on the crochet hook for each new chain stitch.
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
- Start by making a slip knot on the crochet hook.
- Crochet a foundation chain (aka chain stitch) of any amount
- Yarn over the hook, insert the hook from front to back of the second chain from the hook.
- Yarn over the hook again and pull back through the stitch (aka pick up a loop)
- Yarn over the hook and pull back through all three loops on the hook. This completes a half double crochet stitch!
You will also need to know to skip stitches and slip stitch as well, both of which are easy to learn! Promise.
