Materials

You’ll need a few supplies to make this square such as four weight yarn, crochet hook, a tapestry needle (aka yarn needle) as well as a few other notions which we’ll go over below.

  • Lion Brand Heartland Yarn: or any four weight yarn in 3 colors.
  • Crochet Hook 4.5 mm: This hook size may also be called a number 7 as well.
  • Tapestry Needle: You will use this to weave in yarn ends when required or to make an invisible join.
  • Scissors: I like to use stork scissors, but any kind will work just as well.

You may also use a stitch marker if desired to mark the first stitch of each round of the square to make it easier to find when crocheting.

Stitches

To be able to make these starburst design square, you’ll just need to know how to make two basic crochet stitches, which are the double crochet stitch and the chain stitch.

  • Double Crochet (dc)
  • Chain (ch)

The stitches mentioned above are both easy stitches that are learned when you first start to crochet, so we have labeled this starburst granny square pattern easy.

Starburst Square Pattern

Make this easy crochet granny square that is worked in the three colors and creates a starburst design.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials Needed:

  • Lion Brand Heartland Yarn (or any 4 weight yarn)
  • Crochet Hook 4.5 mm
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors

Stitches Used:

  • Chain (ch)
  • Double Crochet (dc)

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US standard terms.

The Pattern:

Size: 4″ x 4″

Round 1: With Color A, Ch 3 (counts as a dc), 11 dc into the 3rd ch from the hook, join with a sl st to the first dc. (12)

Round 2: Ch 1, *sc, ch 2, sc all into the next st, rep from * around ending with a sl st into the first sc of the round, join in color B.

Round 3 With Color B, dc, ch 2, dc in to the ch 2 space from the round before, rep from * around ending with a sl st into the first dc of the round, join in color C.

Round 4: With Color C, ch 2 (counts as st), 2 dc in the ch 2 space from the round before, *3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc into the next ch 2 space, 3 dc into the next ch 2 space, 3 dc into the next ch 2 space, repeat from * ending with a 3 dc in the last ch 2 space, sl st to the top of the first dc.

Finishing: Fasten off and weave in loose yarn ends throughout with a yarn needle.
