How to Crochet a Heart Square

To crochet a heart motif, you will be working one stitch (the half double crochet) back and forth in rows, changing color when indicated in the pattern, which will form a heart shape.

Before we share the pattern, let’s discuss the materials you’ll need, as well as the stitches you’ll need to know to make a heart square.

Materials

You will need to have a few materials on hand to be able to complete this heart motif. Below, we’ll elaborate on the easiest yarn and crochet hook size for a beginner to start crocheting a heart with.

  • Yarn: The best yarn for a beginner to crochet a heart motif is with a worsted weight (aka four weight) yarn. But keep in mind, this can be crocheted with any size yarn you wish.
  • Crochet Hook: The most common hook size used for a four weight yarn is a H 5 mm crochet hook. You can use whatever hook size you’d like. I suggest reading the yarn label of the yarn you pick for the crochet hook size that is recommended
  • Scissors: A nice pair of yarn scissors are great for cutting yarn ends when required.
  • Tapestry Needle: You will need this to weave in the yarn ends once you are done crocheting this heart square.

Keep in mind that the finished heart square can be used in Valentine’s Day designs like pillows, blankets and much more.

Stitches

You will need to know how to make a half double crochet stitch as well as the chain stitch to complete this heart square motif. The pattern is worked in rows back and forth using half double crochets and chains at the end to bring the next row up to height.

Half Double Crochet Stitch (hdc)

  1. Make a slip knot on the crochet hook.
  2. Crochet a foundation chain (aka chain stitch) of any amount
  3. Yarn over the hook, insert the hook from front to back of the second chain from the hook.
  4. Yarn over the hook again and pull back through the stitch (aka pick up a loop)
  5. Yarn over the hook and pull back through all three loops on the hook. This completes a half double crochet stitch!

Chain Stitch (ch)

A chain stitch is a simple crochet stitch that often serves as the foundation for other crochet stitches worked into a project.

  1. Yo (yarn over)
  2. Draw a loop of yarn back through the loop on the crochet hook. You have completed your first chain stitch.
  3. Yo and draw a loop through the loop on the crochet hook for each new chain stitch.
